Predictive Control of an IC Engine: Simulation and Experiment

The paper deals with the model-based predictive control of an IC engine using LOLIMOT algorithm as the source of predictive models. For the control strategy development, a model-in-the-loop approach was used, where a 1-D engine simulation model realized in GT-POWER was controlled by a control model in MATLAB Simulink®. The strategy was afterwards tested in a hardware-in-the-loop fashion, where the model was replaced by a standard truck engine controlled by an own-developed control unit. Originally, a single-input-single-output control scheme was used, which was later augmented for two control inputs (fuel supply, waste-gate adjustment) and two outputs (engine speed, turbocharger speed).
